How to Change Your Registered Agent

To change your registered agent, file a change-of-agent form with your state — it's a required state filing, not just an internal update. Always have your new registered agent confirmed and on file before canceling the current one. Your business must have a registered agent at all times.

State processing typically takes 1–4 weeks and includes a state filing fee of about $10–$60. If you're switching to ZenBusiness, we handle the filing for you.

When You Might Want to Change

Customers most commonly switch registered agents for one of these reasons:

  • You're using your home address and want privacy. Your registered agent address is public record. Moving to a professional service keeps your personal address off state websites and out of search results.
  • You travel or aren't reliably at the registered address during business hours. A professional agent provides a permanent staffed address for state and legal notices.
  • You moved to a new state or foreign-qualified in another state and need an agent in that new state.
  • Your current registered agent is unreliable or hard to reach — missed notices, slow forwarding, or poor support.
  • You want everything centralized — combining registered agent service with formation, compliance, and document storage in one ZenBusiness account.

You can change agents at any time. The change is processed through your state, not through any specific provider.

The Golden Rule: Never Have a Gap

Your LLC or corporation is legally required to have a registered agent on file at all times. If you cancel your current agent before the new one is officially on file with the state, your business is without a registered agent — which violates state law and can expose you to penalties.

Sequence to follow: New agent confirmed → State filing submitted → State processes the change → Current agent relationship ends.

Step-by-Step: Switching to ZenBusiness

If you're switching from another registered agent (or from yourself) to ZenBusiness:

  1. Log in at zenbusiness.com. Go to My Services → Add Services → Registered Agent and subscribe to the service.
  2. ZenBusiness files the change-of-agent form with your state on your behalf. State fees are disclosed before filing.
  3. The state processes the change — typically 1–4 weeks depending on the state.
  4. You'll receive a confirmation when the change is officially on file.
  5. Notify your previous registered agent that their services are no longer needed — but only after the state has confirmed the change.

If you filed your business yourself (or through another provider)

If your business is already formed but uses a different registered agent or yourself, contact our support team. We'll walk you through adding ZenBusiness as your registered agent for an existing business and file the change-of-agent form with your state. Keep your current registered agent active until ZenBusiness is officially on file.

Step-by-Step: Switching Away from ZenBusiness

If you're switching to a different registered agent (another service, an attorney, or yourself):

  1. Confirm your new agent is ready — they must be willing, qualified, and have a physical street address in your state.
  2. File the change-of-agent form with your state's Secretary of State. ZenBusiness can tell you which form to use.
  3. Wait for the state to process the change and confirm the new agent is on file.
  4. Only then cancel your ZenBusiness Registered Agent subscription. Contact our support team — cancellation requires confirming a replacement is in place.

Canceling ZenBusiness before the state change is processed leaves your business without a registered agent — which is a compliance violation. Don't skip step 3.

Multi-State Businesses and Foreign Qualifications

If your LLC is foreign-qualified in states beyond your formation state — meaning you're officially registered to do business in additional states — you need a registered agent in each of those states. Each state requires its own change-of-agent filing, with its own form, fee, and timeline.

Adding a registered agent in a new state: When foreign-qualifying through ZenBusiness, we can serve as your agent in the new state as part of the foreign qualification filing.

Switching existing multi-state agents to ZenBusiness: Contact our support team and provide the list of states where you need changes. We'll identify the correct form and process for each state and coordinate the filings. Documents from each state are managed separately in your ZenBusiness dashboard.

If Your Registered Agent Address Changes

If you're using ZenBusiness and we update our registered office address in your state, we handle the state filing — you don't need to do anything. If you're serving as your own registered agent and your address changes, you must file the address update with the state and pay any applicable state fees promptly. An outdated registered agent address means you may miss legal notices delivered to the old address.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a state fee to change registered agents?

Yes — every state charges a filing fee to record a registered agent change. Typical fees range from $10 to $60 depending on the state. ZenBusiness discloses the specific fee for your state before proceeding.

How long does it take for a registered agent change to take effect?

State processing typically runs 1–4 weeks. Some states (Delaware, Wyoming) process changes faster; others (California, New York) may take longer. ZenBusiness will confirm when the change is officially on file if we're handling the filing.

Can I change my registered agent while my formation is still pending?

Registered agent changes apply to formed businesses. If your formation is still pending with the state, your original registered agent designation will stay in place until formation is complete. Once formed, you can request a change.

Can I change my registered agent myself without going through ZenBusiness?

Yes — every state's Secretary of State website lets you file a change of registered agent directly. You'll need the correct form for your state and entity type, your new agent's information, and the state filing fee. ZenBusiness can handle this on your behalf if you prefer.

I moved to a new address. Do I need to update my registered agent?

That depends. If you're your own registered agent and your address changed, file a change-of-agent form with the state immediately to update your address — there's no grace period. If you use ZenBusiness as your registered agent and you changed your business address, that's a separate process (an address amendment). Our registered agent address stays the same regardless of where you operate.

I'm my own registered agent and I'm moving. What do I do?

File a change-of-agent form with your state immediately, listing your new address. There's typically a state filing fee. Do this promptly — operating with an outdated registered agent address means you may miss legal notices delivered to the old address.
