How to Check Domain Name and Trademark Availability

To check if a domain name is available, use a registrar's live search tool — including the domain search on ZenBusiness.com, GoDaddy, or Namecheap. For trademark availability, search the USPTO's free Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS) at tmsearch.uspto.gov. ZenBusiness cannot check live domain availability or verify trademark status on your behalf.

Check Domain Name Availability

A domain name is available if no one has registered it yet. Domain registrars maintain live availability databases — you can search instantly for free.

Search for your domain

ZenBusiness domain search:
1. Go to zenbusiness.com
2. Go to Web Tools → Domains
3. Enter the name you want and click Search
4. ZenBusiness domains are $25/year standalone, or included in the Online Tools Bundle ($149/year with domain, domain privacy, business email, and website builder)

Third-party registrar search (free):
- GoDaddy: godaddy.com — search bar on homepage
- Namecheap: namecheap.com — search bar on homepage
- Google Domains: domains.google.com

Enter your desired name and the search tool shows whether .com, .net, .org, and other extensions are available instantly.

If your first-choice domain is taken

  • Try a different extension: .co, .io, .biz, .net, .us
  • Add a descriptor: yourbusiness**hq**.com, **shop**yourbusiness.com
  • Add your city or state: yourbusiness**miami**.com, yourbusiness**tx**.com
  • Check if the owner is using it — inactive domains sometimes expire and become available; domain watchlist services like GoDaddy's domain backorder notify you when a domain drops

Check Trademark Availability

A trademark protects a brand name, logo, or slogan at the national level. Searching before you register your business name or domain helps avoid future legal conflicts.

Search the USPTO database (free)

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office provides a free public search tool:

  1. Go to tmsearch.uspto.gov
  2. Use the Basic word mark search to look up your business name or brand
  3. Look at Live registrations in your industry category (called an International Class)
  4. A result doesn't automatically mean you can't use the name — trademark law is complex; consult an attorney for interpretation

What to look for: Focus on "Live" marks in the same industry class as your business. A trademark in an unrelated industry typically doesn't block your use — but confirm with an attorney before proceeding.

Trademark vs. domain availability

These are independent of each other:

Domain availability Trademark availability
What it means Is this web address registered? Does someone legally own this brand name?
Where to check Domain registrar (ZenBusiness, GoDaddy, etc.) USPTO TESS (tmsearch.uspto.gov)
Who manages it Domain registrars U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
Cost to check Free Free

A name can be available as a domain but trademarked by someone else. Always check both before committing to a brand name.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ZenBusiness check if my domain name is available?

ZenBusiness cannot search live domain availability in this help article or through Velo AI. Use the domain search tool at zenbusiness.com under Web Tools → Domains — it shows live availability and lets you purchase directly. You can also use GoDaddy or Namecheap for a free search.

Can ZenBusiness tell me if a trademark is already registered?

No. ZenBusiness cannot search the trademark registry or provide trademark legal advice. Use the USPTO's free TESS tool at tmsearch.uspto.gov. For an interpretation of results and whether it's safe to proceed, consult a trademark attorney.

My preferred .com is taken. Should I buy a different extension?

Yes, if the name is important to your brand. Extensions like .co and .io are widely used and recognized, especially in tech and services. The .com extension still has the strongest name recognition with consumers — if .com is taken and the owner is actively using it, a different extension or a modified name may be the better long-term choice.

How do I buy a domain through ZenBusiness?

Go to your ZenBusiness dashboard → Web Tools → Domains → search your name → select an available domain → purchase. Domains are $25/year, or included in the Online Tools Bundle ($149/year). After purchase, see What to Do After Buying Your ZenBusiness Domain for setup steps.

Does ZenBusiness offer trademark registration services?

Yes. ZenBusiness has a trademark filing service where an attorney reviews your application and advises on likelihood of approval. Start from your ZenBusiness dashboard under the trademark or legal services section.

What domain extensions does ZenBusiness support?

ZenBusiness offers .com, .net, .org, .co, and other standard extensions. Search your name in the domain tool to see which extensions are available and their pricing.
