How to Handle a Failed Stripe Payout
If a Stripe payout fails, open the payout in Stripe, read the failure reason, correct the bank account or verification issue, and resume payouts if Stripe asks you to. Stripe may retry the payout at the next scheduled payout interval after the issue is fixed. Then confirm the receiving bank account is connected to Money Pro through Plaid.
What a Failed Payout Means
A failed payout means Stripe attempted to send funds to your bank account, but the bank could not accept the transfer or Stripe could not complete it. Common causes include incorrect bank details, a closed account, unsupported account type, bank restrictions, verification issues, or a payout account that needs to be re-entered.
Stripe says a payout may initially show as paid and then change to failed after the bank returns the funds. The bank return process can take up to 5 additional business days.
Money Pro does not cause or approve Stripe payout failures. Stripe and the receiving bank control whether the payout can be delivered.
Step 1 — Review the Failure in Stripe
- Log in at stripe.com.
- Open Balance or Payouts.
- Select the failed payout.
- Read the failure reason and any action Stripe recommends.
- Check for dashboard banners such as Action required or Payouts paused.
Keep the payout amount, date, and failure reason available if you contact Stripe, your bank, or ZenBusiness support.
Step 2 — Fix Bank Account or Verification Issues
If Stripe says the bank account caused the failure, re-enter or update your payout bank details in Stripe:
- Go to Settings → Bank accounts and scheduling or Stripe payout settings.
- Edit the bank account used for payouts.
- Confirm routing number, account number, country, and currency.
- Save and complete any verification steps.
If Stripe says verification is required, complete the requested identity, business, tax, or document steps. Payouts can remain paused until verification is complete.
Step 3 — Resume or Wait for the Retry
After the issue is fixed, Stripe may retry the payout automatically at the next scheduled payout interval. If Stripe shows a Resume Payouts button, click it after resolving the bank or verification issue.
Do not repeatedly change payout settings without reading Stripe's failure message. If the bank account details are correct but the bank rejected the payout, contact your bank to ask why it rejected an incoming Stripe transfer.
Step 4 — Check Money Pro Reconciliation
After the payout succeeds and the deposit posts to your bank, Money Pro can reconcile it only if the receiving account is connected through Plaid.
If you updated the bank account in Stripe while fixing the failed payout, connect that same account in Money Pro. Otherwise, the funds may arrive in your bank while Money Pro cannot automatically link the deposit to invoices or create Stripe fee transactions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my Stripe payout fail?
Most failed payouts are caused by bank account issues, unsupported account types, closed accounts, incorrect routing or account numbers, bank restrictions, or Stripe verification requirements. Open the failed payout in Stripe to see the specific reason.
Will Stripe retry a failed payout automatically?
Often, yes. After you fix the issue, Stripe may retry the payout at the next scheduled payout interval. If Stripe shows Resume Payouts, click it after correcting the bank or verification problem.
Can ZenBusiness resend a failed Stripe payout?
No. Stripe controls payout delivery and retries. ZenBusiness can help you understand how the payout affects Money Pro invoices and bank reconciliation, but failed payout correction happens in Stripe and sometimes with your bank.
What if the payout failed because I entered the wrong bank account?
Update the bank account in Stripe immediately. Stripe warns that incorrect bank information can send funds to the wrong account and may not always be recoverable. Contact Stripe support from your dashboard if funds were sent to incorrect details.
Why does Money Pro still not show the payout after Stripe fixes it?
Money Pro needs the receiving bank account connected through Plaid and synced. If you changed the payout bank account in Stripe, connect the new bank account in Money Pro or refresh the existing connection.
